Scholarship at the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology

Subject of Study: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Engineering Physics Scholarship from: Chalmers University of Technology Grade: Research Position Description of Scholarship: We offer a research student position, leading in the first hand to the degree Licentiate of Engineering, in the area of flow and rheological properties of fibre suspension of relevance to the papermaking process. The aim is to establish which requirements the processes involved put on the rheological and structural characteristics of certain cellulosic fibre suspensions. Time- as well as frequency-dependent mechanical behaviour in simple and more complex flow situations is to be evaluated by means of rheometry. Fibre suspensions of the above type are known to build-up network structures and a further aim is to find correlations between structural characteristics and resulting rheological behaviour. Modelling work is expected in this context.

The research project will be funded by the Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC). WWSC is a joint research centre at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Chalmers University of Technology, which aims to build a material research program that can develop new products using the Swedish forests.

Required qualifications

The candidate should be interested in both experimental and modelling work. We believe that a suitable background is M Sc in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Engineering Physics (or similar education). Good knowledge in polymer science, flow behaviour and rheology is an advantage. The candidate is expected to take an active part in the teaching duties at the department. The research results will be disseminated in Swedish and English, and good skills in writing and speaking these languages are therefore valuable.
