Google Scholarships
As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to advancing computing and technology, we are pleased to provide scholarships to encourage students to excel in their studies and become active role models and leaders. We hope these programs also help in dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields.
We currently offer the following scholarship programs:
Academic Scholarships
Google Anita Borg Scholarship
The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of Anita Borg and her efforts to encourage women to pursue careers in computer science and technology. The scholarship is offered in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Google United Negro College Fund Scholarship
The Google-UNCF Scholarship is awarded annually to a group of African-American students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science or computer engineering. The program offers “last dollar” scholarships based upon unmet financial need for students majoring in computer science or computer engineering.
Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship
Hispanic College Fund Scholarships are given to Hispanic students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. The Google Scholarship Program offers funds to students studying computer science or computer engineering.
Google AISES Scholarship
Google is please to announce a new scholarship program in partnership with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. A group of AISES students currently pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science or computer engineering will be selected for a $10,000 scholarship each. Recipients will also be invited to attend the Annual Google Scholars’ Retreat in Mountain View, CA.
Google Zawadi Africa Scholarship
As part of our ongoing commitments to supporting education in Africa and to diversifying the engineering talent pool, we are encouraging African women to pursue careers in computer science and technology. We’ve partnered with the Zawadi Africa Educational Fund to grant five Kenyan women full scholarships to complete degrees in computer science, computer engineering and/or ICT. The Google Zawadi Scholars will pursue studies at top universities in Kenya and South Africa, and they’ll each have the support of a Google engineering mentor. Selection criteria include excellent academics, extracurricular involvement, leadership potential and financial need.

The Global Community Scholarship offers funding for a group of students outside the U.S. to attend the annual Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.
Google MESA Scholarships for the NSBE, AISES & SHPE National Conferences

Australia grants work permission to foreign students

Starting on and after 26 April 2008, people coming to Australia to study on a student visa will automatically be granted permission to work. Permission to work will also apply to eligible family members that will stay with the foreign student in Australia.
The new rule will save time and money, as foreign students are no longer required to apply to work separately once they arrive in Australia.
Current work rights accorded foreign students will not change. Students will not be allowed to work until their studies have started and can only work up to 20 hours per week while their studies are in session (excluding any work that is a registered part of their course of study or training). During scheduled course breaks, students can work as much as they want.
Family members of the student will also not be allowed to work until the student’s course has started and will only be allowed to work 20 hours per week — unless the student is taking a Master’s or doctorates course. Family members of Masters and doctoral students can work unlimited hours.
Student visa application charges will also change to take into account the new work privileges. Currently, students who wish to work are required to pay a student visa application charge of AUD $430, plus an additional AUD $60 for permission to work. On and after 26 April 2008, a single fee of $450 will be charged for the visa and permission to work.
Students who work in Australia gain valuable experience and contacts, giving them a head start on a more permanent visa if they wish to stay.
